Borders are odd. Sometimes they are divisive. Other times they serve as connections. Often, it’s difficult to pin down just where they lie. Where’s the border between a beer drinker and a beer lover? A pale ale, extra pale ale, and India pale ale?
Eric Martens wants to blur the borders even more with his Border Brewing, set to open on Saturday, February 21 in the Crossroads Arts District starting at 11:00 am. The tiny tap room in front of an equally tiny three-barrel brewhouse sits across the street from Grinder’s on 18th, just west of Oak St. The walls are decorated with everything Kansas City and Crossroads. A tribute to the both the border town and border neighborhood.
Border Brewing will initially offer six regular beers, all approachable to beer drinkers and beer lovers alike. The truly gateway Blonde Ale is brewed with an German ale strain and flavored with lemon and orange peel. The Patio Ale is an extra pale ale somewhere between a traditional American pale ale and IPA. For the hop-heads, an Imperial IPA will deliver the goods. Down the color scale brings us to the hoppy, amber Rooftop Red Ale. Then a porter aged on oak dubbed Campfire Porter. And a Chocolate Milk Stout rounds out the list. Another tap at any given time will be voted on by drinkers via social media and a tally at the tap room.
The small initial size of the brewery is due in part to the startup costs. Border Brewing is the investment of Eric’s retirement savings from the engineering desk job that was making him antsy. All of his retirement. With a boost from some friends and family. The small size is also part of the plan. Success at this location could lead to a second production space and distribution, leaving the original as a hub of experimentation and interaction with customers.
Border Brewing will be open Wednesday thru Sunday for beer and conversation. During the week, they’ll open at 4:00 and be closed by 9:00. On the weekends, hours stretch until 11:00. Except during Royals games. Eric was granted an exemption to stay open until 30 minutes after then end of the game.
The grand opening for Border Brewing is this Saturday, February 21 from 11:00 am until 11:00 pm. They will be open again Sunday starting at 11:00 am until 6:00.
