Best Small Brewery – KC Beer Awards Nominations

Flight at Double Shift

Category Two: Best Small Brewery

There is one large brewery in this town. And a growing flock of small breweries and brew pubs which may fly under the radar because of location, distribution or something else. Which is your favorite? Is there a new brewery in a small town that we don’t know about? It’s time to nominate your favorite local small brewery.

Which is your pick for Best Small Brewery in (or around) KC in 2015? Make your nominations by December 9.

KC Beer Awards

We decided that it is something both to celebrate and to recognize. So, like many other publications before us, we are announcing our first KC Beer Awards!

We’re having just a few simple categories to start. And we’re limiting the nominees to local breweries, bars, and shops. And we’ll be the sole decision makers on what is “local”. But I’ll say Lawrence is in. Springfield is not. The border is somewhere in between.

Here’s how we’ll do this:

  • We will announce one category each day this week.
  • You, the fine beer folks out there will have one week to nominate your pick in the comments of each post. No limit on nominations.
  • After all the nominations are in, everyone will have from December 14 until New Year’s Eve to vote early and often for your favorites.

KC Beer Awards Categories

Category One: Best Beer of 2015

Category Two: Best Small Brewery

Category Three: Best Beer Bar

Category Four: Best Bottle Shop

I began the path through good beer in college. Exploring different sixers and bombers based on packaging and label design (art student, mind you), I weaved my way around the continental lagers and Colorado craft ales. My knowledge and interest exploded upon receiving a homebrewing equipment kit as a graduation gift from my parents. Twelve years later, I've brewed most styles, experimented between them, and hunted for the perfect pint.

  1. Double Shift Brewing! Always a solid lineup and great rotationals. Plus, the master brewer/owner is a Kansas Firefighter.

  2. Double Shift Brewing Company in the Crossroads District! Solid line up, solid people, great addition to the beer community.

  3. Doubleshift in the Crossroads is by far the best new small brewpub in Kansas City. Always trying something new and great atmosphere!

  4. It’s wonderful to have so many great ones opening now – Border and Torn Label in the Crossroads definitely deserve consideration!

  5. Double Shift Brewery is at the top of my list! The coffee ale collaboration with Pirate Bay was a revelation–lots of flavor, but still drinkable. The rotation continues to change and bring in new brews (like a spiced quad).

    1. It’s been called to my attention that the collaboration is with Pirate Bone not Pirate Bay.

  6. Grain to Glass in NKC.
Great selection of beers on tap, bottled beer, and they even sell ingredients and equipment to brew your own beer!

  7. I agree with the crowd, Double Shift gets my vote. Great beers, great atmosphere, great location.

    1. I’ll assume this was meant for Best Bottle Shop. Unless Dan has something brewing in the produce department I don’t know about …

  8. Crane Brewery, they are a new Brewery that hits the market in KC today and they are home based in Raytown

  9. Weston Brewery offers consistently satisfying beers and ales. Haven’t jumped on the cool kids’ IPA bandwagon, thank God!
