Best Missouri/Kansas Brewery Not in KC

The Scouts couldn’t agree more. Nothing says the Midwest like beer brewed in a barn, uh BARn, right? Piney River Brewing in tiny Bucyrus, MO (near slightly-less-tiny Houston, MO) crafts and cans some amazing beer. I don’t know if the pungent and fruity Mule Team IPA, nutty but refreshing Black Walnut Wheat or the made-for-a-canoe Float Trip Ale was the driving force of the voting. But we aren’t going to argue.

Sounds good. Where can get their beer? Lucky for you, Piney River Brewing is now distributing their cans to the Missouri side of the metro. You can pick up six-packs of several of their beers at your favorite local bottle shop. Or head down to the BARn for a visit.

Best Bottle Shop

The award for Best Bottle Shop goes to the little liquor store around the corner from Beer Scout HQ, Brookside Wine & Spirits, that despite their name, has a great selection of craft beer. Their beer cave, a walk-in cooler tacked on to the back of their original building, is stocked with great things at the right temperature. The friendly staff hosts beer tasting just about every Friday. They even have three taps to fill a crowler with local beer that may not be available in other packages.

Awesome. I should check them out. Where are they? Brookside Wine & Spirits is at 600 E 63rd St, the corner of 63rd Street and Cherry Rd, in Kansas City. They host beer tastings ever Friday. So stop in and talk to Cameron or whoever is behind the counter.

Best Beer Bar

Honestly, we’ve never been to the Rusty Horse in Parkville. This is what their Facebook page has to say:

“We are your local tavern, serving up the best gourmet burgers in town, Craft Beer, and an extensive menu that includes everything house-made from sauces to fries. We support local farmers and our food is always fresh.

Featured are products from Scavuzzo’s, Bagel Works Bread Company, Boulevard Brewing Company, and our local farmers. With 24 beers on tap, and a variety of domestic and craft bottles, Rusty Horse Tavern will is the Northland’s destination spot for you and your friends.

Bring the family and see what we’re cooking up at your neighborhood restaurant and tavern.”

Sweet! Where is it? The Rusty Horse Tavern is located at 6325 Lewis Dr, in Parkville, MO.

And in 2017…

There’s so much in the KC corner of the craft beer world to look forward to this year. Several new breweries will be opening (or have already). And most of the breweries in the area are younger than 5 years old. They are all rounding into form as they mature. More and more breweries will be entering the Kansas City market (Dogfish Head, anyone?). The winners of the 2017 Golden Tappys will most likely be a completely different group.

Exciting times ahead for beer lovers in Kansas City!

I began the path through good beer in college. Exploring different sixers and bombers based on packaging and label design (art student, mind you), I weaved my way around the continental lagers and Colorado craft ales. My knowledge and interest exploded upon receiving a homebrewing equipment kit as a graduation gift from my parents. Twelve years later, I've brewed most styles, experimented between them, and hunted for the perfect pint.
