Beer or Cartoon Character?

If I were to name a cartoon character after a beer (you know, ’cause that’s a likely scenario), it would be this one: Belgoo Magus. A mix of Mr. Magoo and a James Bond-type villian, he’d be both sinister and sweet. Focused and in charge, yet a bit fruity. Which is — not coincidentally — just as this beer is. Balanced, crisp and light yet also bitter and a touch metallic, this beer was much different than I expected.

I’ll be honest; the girliness of the bottle spoke to me during the first pour. (And there were a few pours.) There were polka dots! And pretty colors! But the taste is what kept me tasting. At first the beer came off like a fancy Bud Light, but after a few bubbly sips, I really could pick up the nuances of the flavors, from apple to cinnamon to an overall bitter cider/beer type experience.

While it’s not something I’ll pick up and drink all the time, it’s contradictory nature is intriguing. And it’s certainly fun to think of what ruckus “Belgoo Magus” might be causing…
