Santa Fe Irish Red

Santa Fe Irish Red Ale

Note: This is the first of my “catch-up” reviews. It’s short and to the point. And a sign of things to come.

Santa Fe Irish Red AleFrom the deep red can, Santa Fe Irish Red Ale poured a clear ruddy brown, with a firm, rocky head. It smelled very toasty, with some caramel and toffee aroma mingling in. This red had a slightly burnt flavor, like bread crust, initially. Brown sugar and a mild, though spicy, herbal bitterness rounded out the first gulp. Santa Fe’s rendition of this popular spring seasonal style is a well balanced, semi-sweet and medium-bodied beer. It’s very drinkable. And handsome cans, to boot.

I began the path through good beer in college. Exploring different sixers and bombers based on packaging and label design (art student, mind you), I weaved my way around the continental lagers and Colorado craft ales. My knowledge and interest exploded upon receiving a homebrewing equipment kit as a graduation gift from my parents. Twelve years later, I've brewed most styles, experimented between them, and hunted for the perfect pint.
